Our Story

Moving Shouldn't Be This Hard

We started Tater Totes because we've been through the chaos of moving ourselves — the flimsy boxes that fall apart mid-carry, the stuff that shifts and breaks in transit, the mountain of cardboard you're stuck dealing with after.

Our mission is simple: help people move easily, without the worry of damaging their belongings or the hassle of dealing with boxes.

Whether you're moving a studio apartment or a whole house, we want your move day to be the least stressful part of the process. That's what Tater Totes is built for.

Moving Tips for Boston & the North Shore: What Nobody Tells You

Moving in Greater Boston is not like moving anywhere else. The city has its own rules — literally. If you are relocating in or around Boston, Salem, Beverly, or anywhere on the North Shore, here is what you need to know before move day.

1. Get a Parking Permit (Seriously)

Boston requires a moving truck parking permit for street parking in most neighborhoods. You need to apply at least 5 business days in advance through the city website. Skip this and you risk a ticket or — worse — your truck getting towed mid-move.

If you are moving to Cambridge, Somerville, or another nearby city, check their individual permit requirements. Each has its own rules.

2. Know Your Building's Elevator Policy

Many Boston apartment buildings have elevator reservations for moves. Contact your building manager at least a week out to book your window. Most buildings only allow moves during specific hours — usually 8am to 5pm on weekdays.

3. September 1st is Chaos — Plan Accordingly

Boston is a college city. September 1st is the unofficial moving day when tens of thousands of leases turn over simultaneously. If your move date falls near September 1st, book everything — truck, totes, movers — at least 6 weeks in advance. Prices spike and availability disappears fast.

4. North Shore Moves Have Different Challenges

If you are moving in Salem, Beverly, Gloucester, Danvers, or Lynn, the streets are generally wider and easier to navigate than Boston proper. But older homes often come with narrow staircases and low ceilings — measure your furniture before move day, not during.

5. Ditch the Cardboard

Cardboard boxes are a nightmare in New England weather. One rainy move day and everything is soggy. Reusable plastic totes are waterproof, stackable, and do not collapse under weight. They are also faster to pack and unpack because they are all the same size.

6. Build Your Moving Day Checklist

  • Confirm parking permit is approved
  • Reserve elevator if applicable
  • Notify utility companies of your move date
  • Forward your mail at USPS.com (free, takes 2 minutes)
  • Measure doorways and stairwells for large furniture
  • Schedule tote delivery 1-2 days before move day
  • Have a backup plan for weather

Why Reusable Moving Totes Beat Cardboard Boxes Every Time

The average home move uses between 50 and 100 cardboard boxes. Most of them get used once, then crushed and thrown away. It is wasteful, it is expensive, and there is a better way.

The Problem with Cardboard

Cardboard boxes seem cheap until you do the math. A quality moving box runs $2–$5 each. For a 2-bedroom move, you might spend $100–$300 just on boxes — before tape, labels, and packing materials. And at the end of your move, you are left with a stack of beat-up boxes you have to break down, recycle, or leave on the curb.

What Makes Reusable Totes Better

They are Waterproof

Heavy-duty plastic totes do not care about rain. Whether it is a drizzle or a full New England downpour, your stuff stays dry.

They Stack Perfectly

Because every tote is the same size, they stack cleanly in the truck — no Jenga-style balancing act. You fit more per trip and nothing shifts in transit.

They are Faster to Pack and Unpack

No assembly required. No tape. No folding. You open, you fill, you close, you move. At your new place, you empty them and stack them by the door for pickup. Done.

They are Better for the Environment

A single set of reusable totes replaces hundreds of cardboard boxes over their lifetime. Less waste, less cutting down trees, less ending up in a landfill.

They are Cost-Effective

Renting a set of totes for your move costs a fraction of buying cardboard boxes — and you do not have to deal with the disposal afterward. We drop them off, you move, we pick them up. Simple.

The Bottom Line

Cardboard is a habit, not a requirement. Once you move with reusable totes, you will never go back to assembling boxes at midnight with a tape gun.

How to Plan a Stress-Free Move in New Hampshire

New Hampshire is one of the fastest-growing states in New England. People are moving in from Boston, from out of state, and between NH towns at a higher rate than ever. Whether you are heading to Manchester, Nashua, Portsmouth, or somewhere in between — here is how to plan a move that does not turn into a disaster.

Start Planning 6–8 Weeks Out

The biggest mistake people make is starting too late. Six to eight weeks gives you time to get quotes, book a truck or moving company, and handle the logistics without rushing.

Know NH Moving Season

Unlike Boston with its September 1st crunch, New Hampshire busiest moving months are June through August. If you are moving during these months, expect higher prices and tighter availability — book early.

Understand the Tax Advantage

New Hampshire has no sales tax and no income tax. If you are moving from Massachusetts, this is a significant financial win. Factor this into your budget planning.

Build Your NH Moving Checklist

  • 8 weeks out: Get moving quotes, book truck or moving company
  • 6 weeks out: Order packing supplies or schedule tote delivery
  • 4 weeks out: Start packing non-essentials
  • 2 weeks out: Forward mail, notify utilities, update your address
  • 1 week out: Pack everything except daily essentials
  • Move day: Have totes delivered 1–2 days early so you can pack at your own pace
  • After move: Update your NH driver license within 60 days

Packing Tips for NH Homes

Many New Hampshire homes have tight staircases and low-ceiling basements. Measure your large furniture before move day. Also: NH weather is unpredictable. Use waterproof reusable totes instead of cardboard.

The Best NH Towns to Move To Right Now

  • Manchester — largest city, growing tech scene, diverse neighborhoods
  • Nashua — consistently ranked one of the best cities to live in the US
  • Portsmouth — historic, walkable, great restaurants
  • Derry — affordable, family-friendly, easy highway access
  • Hampton — beach town with year-round community vibe
